We often quote 1 John 4.18 (“There is no fear in love; perfect love casts out fear”) whenever we encounter a situation where fear may be involved (fear in evangelism, fear in persecution, etc.), to the point where one might use this verse to say that fear has no place in the life of a Christian. But is that what this verse is actually saying? Rather, this verse has a specific application in mind, one that offers great hope, comfort, encouragement, and confidence to the Christian who may be uncertain about his or her salvation.
